THE FLAMING FEMINIST
|As far as nicknames go, JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG’S newest may be her best yet. At an event for first-year law students at Georgetown University yesterday (yes, Tiffany Trump was in the crowd), the justice referred to herself as a flaming feminist litigator. And when she was told that the new Georgetown class was comprised mostly of women, Ginsburg smiled broadly and said, “To look out at a class like this is exhilarating.” (h/t Hillary Moglen)
WELL SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE
|A woman on the move, JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG was also a surprise guest at last night’s services for Rosh Hashanah at a historic synagogue in Washington. Ginsburg told worshippers she believes being Jewish helps her empathize with other minority groups. She also noted, “The Jewish religion is an ethical religion. That is, we are taught to do right, to love mercy, do justice, not because there’s gonna be any reward in heaven or punishment in hell. We live righteously because that’s how people should live and not anticipating any award in the hereafter.” Worshippers were not told ahead of time that she’d be appearing.
MEET NOEL
|Marcia Coyle and Mike Scarcella with The National Law Journal tell us everything we need to know about the newly confirmed U.S. solicitor general, NOEL FRANCISCO, as he prepares to step to the lectern at 1 First Street.
LET THEM EAT CAKE!
|Roxanne Roberts with The Washington Post reports on the protest that took place at the sixth annual Chefs for Equality party in which bakers presented cakes in support of gay marriage ahead of the Supreme Court case dealing with one baker’s refusal to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.
FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT
|“The first generation of immigrants from Japan had a saying: kodomo no tame ni. It means, ‘for the sake of the children.’ That’s why this is important. That’s why we’re doing this. The whole world is watching. And we all know what that means.” That’s Governor David Ige of Hawaii and Attorney General Doug Chin of Hawaii writing in HuffPost that Hawaii will continue to fight against the president’s travel ban because “we are all the children and grandchildren of immigrants.”
SWEAT BABY, SWEAT BABY
|In Glamour, Bryan Johnson walks us through RUTH BADER GINSBURG’S workout, and let me tell ya, it ain’t easy. I did it this morning and have the sore arms to prove it. Try it yourself: All you need is a resistance band and the sassy spirit of the feminist justice to get yourself through.
