May 8, 2017
WELCOME TO THE FUN HOUSE
|Today, PRESIDENT TRUMP is set to unveil is first major tranche of judicial nominees to fill an unusually high number of court vacancies that will allow him to remake the federal judiciary. Two of the nominees who will be unveiled Monday were on the list of Trump’s potential Supreme Court justices and will likely come under scrutiny by Democrats because of that inclusion: Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen, who will be nominated to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, and Justice David Stras, who sits on the Minnesota Supreme Court and is Trump’s pick to sit on the 8th Circuit.
SEE YOU IN COURT
|“PRESIDENT TRUMP will try to break his losing streak in court on Monday when his lawyers go before the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Virginia and urge its judges to revive his temporary ban on foreigners arriving from six majority Muslim countries.” David Savage with the Los Angeles Times reports on today’s hearing.
THE LONGSHOT
|In last night’s episode of Veep, former president SELINA MEYER gets herself on the shortlist to become the newest Supreme Court justice. It’s a portrayal of how quickly rumors can spread in Washington, because with only one mention of a nonexistent rumor that Meyer is in contention, she suddenly becomes in contention. Vulture’s Jessica Goldstein has a write-up on the SCOTUS-themed episode.
