SAVE THE SCOTUS DRAMA | Justice Thomas To Swear In Pence
January 13, 2016
IF YOU DON'T KNOW, NOW YOU KNOW
|CNN’s Ariane de Vogue reminds us that aside from the hotly anticipated Supreme Court nomination, DONALD TRUMP has another big choice on his hands — who will be his solicitor general. “So far, two names have emerged as strong potentials,” she writes. “The two possible nominees reflect the opposite ends of a spectrum. The first, CHARLES J. COOPER, is a fixture of the Washington legal scene. The second, GEORGE CONWAY, would be an outside-of-the-box choice. Others are jockeying for the job and the situation is fluid, according to sources close to the transition.”
ANOTHA ONE
|CNN’s Joan Biskupic says we should save the SCOTUS drama for DONALD TRUMP’S second Supreme Court nomination, or what she says Democrats are “girding for” because it would spell “years of political turmoil.”
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
|January 20 is a “big, big” day. DONALD TRUMP will be sworn in by CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS, and as Lawrence Hurley with Reuters reports, JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS will swear in Vice President-elect MIKE PENCE. Hurley notes, “The nation’s chief justice usually swears in the president but an incoming vice president traditionally picks someone else to administer the oath of office.
NEVER IS ENOUGH, YEAH NEVER IS ENOUGH
|Scott Bomboy for Constitution Daily considers whether it is enough for DONALD TRUMP to address the Emoluments Clause with a business trust and a few donations of hotel fees. Meanwhile, David Fisher with Forbes says we shouldn’t expect the courts to solve Trump’s conflicts of interest, because the likelihood of a case coming before the courts at all is slim to none.
SCOTUS 101
|We’re going back to the basics, people. Joseph Williams with U.S. News explains how a case gets heard by the Supreme Court. So brush up on the fundamentals and test your knowledge because as a wise man once said, “It’s the little details that are vital.”
NOMINATIONS 101
|The staff over at Constitution Daily put together an introduction to the process of Supreme Court nominations which is not-so simple, my friends. May I remind you of JUDGE MERRICK GARLAND.
